Joan Cornellà: Send Yourself Nowhere but Shanghai

Spanish artist Joan Cornellà is known for his dark humor that is both entertaining and stimulating. The iconic works have earned him nearly 8 million followers on social media. With a bright and bold palette, simplistic and cheerful language of painting, Cornellà probes deeply into the contemporary society, inspiring viewers to ponder upon themselves as well as the surrounding world.

Being Joan Cornellà’s first large-scale museum solo exhibition in China, Send Yourself Nowhere But Shanghai will feature the artist’s latest works of acrylic on canvas and sculptural installations. Different from his previous works which often feature succinct and pure color blocks, the acrylic on canvases on view feature subtle and detailed delineation against the brightly colored backgrounds, laying a new milestone in his creative career.

The characters featured in Joan Cornellà’s work are reminiscent of 1950s advertising in the west and airline safety videos, in which the figures often share a generic blank smile. The fake and blank smiles are also spotted in the figures in Cornellà’s work. Through bright palette and simplistic illustration style, the artist presents scenes radiating a sense of weirdness underneath the seemingly light- heartedness and ridiculousness. The surreal and somewhat fantasy-like delineation conveys the artist’s insights and critique of humanity and the society.

Social phenomena have always remained a prominent source of inspiration for Joan Cornellà as he constantly makes commentary on latest social topics. Works on view at Send Yourself Nowhere But Shanghai are inspired by the profound and far-reaching influence of the pandemic. The outbreak of Covid-19 has made it highly difficult for many people to travel abroad. Given this situation, Cornellà decides to lead viewers to embark on a fantasy journey through his work – to send yourself nowhere. If his previous works tended to focus on the characters and their behavior, his recent works center more on travel and scenario building, which makes the delineation of the background of the works particularly important. The figures in his work show mild demeanor even in the extreme conditions; and against the bizarre backdrops, their simplistic body language further highlights the unusually strong contrast between reality and fantasy.
